Courtney R. Baker is an academic who researches Black visual culture and American cultural justice movements. She holds a Ph.D. from Duke University and a B.A. from Harvard University. Her book Humane Insight: Looking at Images of African American Suffering and Death was published in 2015. She is co-founder and inaugural chair of the Black Studies program at Occidental College. Her writing has appeared in the Journal of American Culture, Parallax, ASAP/J, Avidly, Huffington Post: Black Voices, and New Black MAN. She lives in Los Angeles.
